The promise of autonomous driving
Why is autonomous driving taking so long? The current approach in the industry is to start with nominal driving, do some demos and then incrementally add capabilities hoping to reach a finished product which is safe. It is relatively easy to develop something that works 90% of the time; 99% is harder but doable. However, to truly be safe, the dependability needed is much higher and incrementally trying to get there is just not feasible.
We believe that the mindset for autonomy development has to change. We need to start with our operational design domain, formulate a safety case, develop requirements and build in safety in all aspects of autonomy development.
